It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the fourth University of Birmingham International Model United Nations Conference (UBIMUN). The event will be held between the 8th and 10th March. We thoroughly look forward to hosting enriching discussions, enthusiastic debate, and positive cooperation.
The conference’s theme will be “reasserting multilateralism”. We would like to probe and challenge the recent rise of nationalism, in the belief that progress towards global peace and prosperity is best achieved through interstate cooperation. This theme is appropriate to discussions of environmental and security issues, of economic and humanitarian contestations. We must maintain and enhance the institutional architecture for collaborative problem solving.
UBIMUN 2019 will also particularly focus on gender issues, noting International Women’s Day on the 8th March. A Special Committee for Gender Equality will discuss male guardianship and measures to address the continuing gender inequality of education. We will also convene a Special Environmental Committee, addressing the most profound threats to our increasingly globalised world. Specifically, it will consider the challenge of resource intensive agriculture, and the role of Less Economically Developed Countries in tackling climate change.
We welcome students from all academic backgrounds and all levels of Model United Nations experience. The conference will be a fantastic opportunity to develop new skills, build lasting friendships and global networks, and consider some of the world’s most challenging problems.
We very much hope to see you in March.
